Stonehenge and Salisbury are detailed on other pages in this website.

Avebury is a Neolithic henge containing three stone circles. Within the earthworks (The Henge) is the largest stone circle in Britain, originally of about 100 stones, which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles.

Nearby are Silbury Hill and the West Kennet Long Barrow. The pub in the centre of Avebury is a great place for a lunch stop.

Glastonbury Abbey was the richest abbey in England. Its ruins are magnificent. Glastonbury is home to myth and legend like no other place, linked to Joseph of Arimathea, Avalon and the burial place of King Arthur.

The Abbey, the Tor, Chalice Well Gardens and the shops in the High Street are all worth a visit.

The City of Wells is famous for its magnificent cathedral and the moated Bishop's Palace.

The Vicar's Close and the Market Square are delightful.

In 60 AD Bath became a spa with the Latin name AquƦ Sulis. Bath Abbey was founded in the 600s and became an important religious centre.

Bath became popular again as a spa town in the Georgian era (1700s). Georgian architecture includes the Royal Crescent, Circus, Pump Room and the Assembly Rooms.

Jane Austen lived in Bath in the early 1800s. Austen's Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are set in the city and describe taking the waters, social life, and music recitals.
